I thought it was great here. The building is old, so the walls are thin...it's fine. The rooms have a great feel (even ours with a crummy view haha). The staff were absolutely impeccable. The Saha food was great, the RESTAURANT staff was less than stellar (rude/short/curt). I was pleased with the Hotel Carlton and totally would stay there again.

You've got to walk or use public transport (nice buses $1.50 for half a day) to get to "touristy" places from this hotel. If you're willing to do that, the Carlton is excellent in several ways: quiet, free wi-fi, great shower, great beds, very clean and fresh smelling room, helpful and friendly staff. Good restaurant on site with great breakfast choices. It's not swanky or beautiful but it's attractive, functional, and comfortable.

The hotel is in easy walking distance of restaurants and cafes, Union Square, China Town, and even the Wharf if you are so inclined. The decor is very nice in the lobby & throughout the rest of the hotel, including the elevator! You can hear the noise from the street, otherwise, this was a great hotel. Very clean, convenient. You get more than what you pay for. Tip: Be prepared to pay for parking, if you park across the street, the parking attendant will make a deal with you. I was a little skeptical before booking this hotel but I am sure glad I did. The staff was extremely helpful. The lobby is really comfortable & turned out to be a hang out spot for the guests. I stayed 5 days and paid $80.00.

No air conditioner but in SF you rarely need it. I used public transportation and had no trouble during regular business hours. Union Square is farther away than you might imagine--use a cab. The hotel is surrounded by almost nothing of interest, so plan to venture out by cab or MUNI. I will gleefully stay here again.

The Carlton was perfect for us. It is well within walking distance of Union Square and plenty of places to eat and shop. I never felt unsafe walking in the area. The staff is extremely helpful. The room was great. The only thing that I would skip would be the hotel restaurant. The service was not good, the food was bland. I would recommend many other options in the area before choosing that one. There is an excellent little Mediterranean place called the Persimmon on Sutter that had great food. We ate there three times for breakfast and dinner!

The "other" Carlton more than exceeded our expectations. The price was right, the rooms were comfy and although not the roomiest, certainly clean and accomadating. The staff, (especially Theo) was courteous, friendly, knowledgable and helpful. They knew exactly what bus to take, to get us to the Giants game...with no transfers! The area can be a bit shady at night, but it certainly made for lots of laughs! Close to transportation, resturants, bars, shops and convinience stores. There are hotels closer to Union square, but not at this price and with this great staff!

Wine tasting every night a big plus -wish it was longer than 1/2 hour - never made it due to all the sightseeing. Worst = thin walls: heard loud talking, people doing "other things".Luckily we were out alot sightseeing. Never had trouble falling asleep b/c of noise. ALL of hotel was very decorative/unique. I was a little skeptical before booking this hotel but I am sure glad I did. The staff was extremely helpful. The lobby is really comfortable & turned out to be a hang out spot for the guests.

This was a great place to stay. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the friendly hotel staff. Around 5 they had a wonderful wine hour in the lobby, where guests can socialize and relax. The hotel is in easy walking distance of restaurants and cafes, Union Square, China Town, and even the Wharf if you are so inclined. Nites are pretty quiet for a city hotel and the accommodations are very homey. One of our favorite places in SF.

Pros: Location, cleanliness, and friendly service
Cons: one of the elevators was under repair

We arrived late and were greeted by very friendly staff. We asked for restaurant recommendations and they called ahead for us to make sure the restaurant would be open when we arrived. The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to help. The hotel 15 minutes walk from Union Square. The room looked like the photos, but a bit smaller than expected, but we were very comfortable. If you want a clean, pretty quiet, friendly, and nicely decorated hotel with good service stay here. Comfortable pillows and bed. Wine tasting each evening was nice. Would definitely stay here again.

I was really excited to stay at the carlton after viewing the pictures of the room(s) we were going to be staying in. After checking we marched up to our room to encounter a really tiny room which looked nothing at all as pictured on this site. The room described two full beds and we got two twins which was not very ideal. Which was the "superior room" good thing we didnt get a regular room i wonder how much smaller that would of been.

Nice, could have been bigger (bf didn't fit in shower very well - he's 6'1", 140lbs). Staff were excellent; extremely helpful! Price reasonable. Recycling can in room + organic soap! =) Would stay again for the price. Not recommended for larger people or whole families.

I was a little skeptical before booking this hotel but I am sure glad I did. The staff was extremely helpful. The lobby is really comfortable & turned out to be a hang out spot for the guests. I travel a lot and this was the most noisy hotel I've ever stayed in. Between the nut yelling every morning at 3am, garbage trucks at 4am, party people all night long, paper thin walls, maid service vaccuming at 7am, when does anyone get to sleep? Will NEVER stay here again!!!!! One plus-nice staff.

I've stayed in SF at least a dozen times, and the Carlton is the best experience I've had. Clean, comfortable room. Friendly, helpful staff. Great breakfast in hotel restaurant. Convenient location. Don't understand those who plan a trip to bustling SF and then complain about street noise in their hotel. If you want peace and quiet, book a b&b in the countryside...or wear earplugs!

The lobby and rooms look EXACTLY like the picture--Lovely. The bath was remodeled and almost brand new. Towels and toiletries were very good quality. The walk-in closet was HUGE.
